Formal Analysis of Painting

Formal Analysis For the first part of your paper you will conduct an analysis of the artwork based entirely on your own observations and experiences of the work. You will look at the visual elements and principles of design (see Artforms and course presentations) and describe how they work together to make a complete and successful artwork. What does this piece look like? Describe fully its subject matter and appearance. Include information about the materials used in the work. Imagine that someone might have to replicate the artwork based solely on your description. How does the composition work? What is the medium? How do the materials used to make the artwork contribute to its appearance? What can you observe of the technique of the artist? Are there visual brushstrokes? No brushstrokes?

Did the sculptor leave chisel marks or sand the surface smooth? Did the photographer manipulate the image digitally or leave the image as it appeared in the moment? Many aspects of an artist’s process are observable in the final product. Look at the note pages you made for this assignment. What other details should you include? If you find you need inspiration, refer back to Artforms, Chapters 3 and 4, to see what you might have overlooked. https://www.google.com/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x880fd0769d2f9a97%3A0x86087962287c4482!2m22!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m16!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!2m2!1m1!1e6!3m1!7e115!4s%2Fmaps%2Fplace%2Fnorthwestern%2Buniversity%2Bart%2Bmuseum%2F%4042.0525009%2C-87.6734252%2C3a%2C75y%2C103.9h%2C90t%2Fdata%3D*213m4*211e1*213m2*211s5s8aI5bV5whdP23rwUOTgg*212e0*214m2*213m1*211s0x880fd0769d2f9a97%3A0x86087962287c4482!5snorthwestern%20university%20art%20museum%20-%20Google%20Search&imagekey=!1e10!2sAF1QipMzAXRa_M-sWJ3xYRSuvH5x70c4Psnx8N8lrbKE&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwis0bHN-t3gAhWE14MKHdmDBHEQpx8wE3oECAUQCw
