Mean is used when you need to find the average in a set of data/series of numbers. Median is the number that is in the center of the entire set of data. Mode is the number/amount that is most repetitive in a set of data. It is suggested that to put each set of data in numeric order before trying to determine the mean, median or mode. If you do not put the series of numbers in numeric order you take a chance in receiving/submitting the wrong information. For example, in the set of numbers 2, -4, 5, -1, 3, the correct numerical order would be -4, -1, 2, 3, 5. Standard deviation is used to distinguish the observations from the other surrounding data and the mean.

The mean (average) of a data set is found by adding all numbers in the data set and then dividing by the number of values in the set. The median is the middle value when a data set is ordered from least to greatest. The mode is the number that occurs most often in a data set. The standard deviation of a random variable, sample, statistical population, data set, or probability distribution is the square root of its variance. While i was in the USMC I was part of a lean six sigma team. one of the things we did was to count the time it took Marines who worked on a particular thing to go get all of the items needed for the job. we would see how long it took them to go get tools, hazmat, publications, etc. After counting these steps 4 or 5 times we would change the shop around so that everything they needed for that particular job was right there and there was no need for them to walk around to check things in and out. we would then come back and time the job again 5 times to see home much quicker they could perform the task. So basically, I had to add up the average time it took to complete each task and use that information to make key decisions to improve the process and then log the time improvements.
